DCHS Presents Godspell:  The Gospel with a Rock ‘n Roll Beat

DCHS’s spring musical production of Godspell exploded onto the stage of the University of Arizona’s Stevie Eller Theatre during this year’s Easter holiday.  Wailing electric guitars, pounding drums, top-notch choreography, powerful vocal performances, and masterful comedic and dramatic acting all worked together to bring the Godspell (the old English word for  “gospel,” which literally means “good news”) of Matthew to life in a way that was thought-provoking and moving at the same time.  This modern re-telling of the life and work of Jesus focuses on the way he worked to bring together a group of very different people to form a tightly-knit community that was forever changed by his stories, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection.  Director Cathy Simon said that this sense of the importance of community is at the heart of Godspell’s message: “[Jesus] came to form a community of vastly different individuals who do not need to agree on everything, but who do need to agree to love one another.”
